Overview of Chain of Ponds

Established: 1993
Winemaker: Greg Clack
Annual Cases: 40000
Region: Adelaide Hills
The Chain of Ponds winery was established in 1985 on the outskirts of Gumeracha in the Adelaide Hills. The winery is named after the Chain of Ponds hamlet (1850-1987) some 4km away. The hamlet was razed by the South Australian Government due to fears of possible pollution to the Millbrook Reservoir and Adelaide's drinking water caused by the town's location on its banks.

While vineyards have been part of the makeup of the area since colonisation, the Chain of Ponds winery was the first major planting of any note in the northern area of the Adelaide Hills Region. Four Thousand vines were planted covering 9 varieties, consisting of 470 vines of each variety and this was further increased with an additional 150 acres in 1989. The first vintage being 1988.

The winery has more recently extended its boundaries and includes fruit sourced from a much broader area of the region, which has added further complexities and subtleties to the wines.

Chain of Ponds is a 5 star boutique winery as judged by James Halliday in 2010 and 2011.
